Educational Talent Search

The Educational Talent Search Program (ETS) at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) is funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant and is designed to help low-income high school students who are potential first generation college students pursue a higher education. ETS identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in school and pursue a higher education. Our program provides academic, career, and financial aid counseling to students and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue on to complete their postsecondary education.

Educational Talent Search Program services include one-on-one academic advising, assistance with admission and financial aid applications, mentoring, college campus visits, cultural activities and parent conferences all at no cost to the student or family! All of the services provided by the ETS program are designed to motivate, encourage, and/or prepare students to graduate from high school and continue on to complete their postsecondary education.

  • One-on-One Academic Advising

ETS counselors meet with participants and review their transcript to make sure they are taking classes that fulfill the entrance requirements set by the University of California and the California State University systems.

  • College Campus Visits/ Cultural Activities

During the academic year, participants will have the opportunity to visit and tour colleges in and around Southern California. They will also have the opportunity to participate in cultural activities that will help to expand their interactions outside of their immediate living area. Transportation and other expenses are paid for by Educational Talent Search.

  • Assistance with College Admissions Requirements

Counselors also remind participants about important deadlines (SAT/ACT, college admissions, financial aid, etc.), and offer assistance when parents/ participants fill out college admission and financial aid forms.

  • Summer Program

ETS's offers its participants an opportunity to participate in a summer residential program where they will have the chance to experience "college life" by living in the UCR residence halls. During their stay they will participate in academic enrichment activities and continue to learn about the college going process.

  • Tutoring

ETS works closely with school sites to ensure students tutoring needs are being met by the provided school site resources.

  • Newsletter

Each year ETS sends out two newsletters to its participants and their families with important information such as: college application deadlines, admission requirements, financial aid information, upcoming events, etc.
